Selecting an Editor

Selecting an Editor

Here are some guidelines and suggestions on selecting an editor and what to send out for a sample.

When selecting an editor, first look at the edit and see if you like it.

Did the edit flow with your style and voice? Do you like the editor's suggestions? Were there comments helpful? Did they give you an explanation of why they moved or reworked things?

Compare us to each other and be ruthless.

We all edit differently and have our own styles, so you will want to pick the one that works best for your book.

Look at the communication you had with them.

Are they easy to talk to? Were they helpful? Did you feel like you wanted something more or different? Are they more laid back, are they more professional, and which would you prefer?

Do you want an editor you can message randomly and ask how it's going and chit chat with? Or do you want the editor that wants to be left alone?

Some editors are more professional and keep things that way. Others, like me, are a little more laid back.

You want to pick someone who is going to work with and help you. Someone you can work with.

There is no right or wrong here. This is all about what is best for you.

Liking your editor isn't necessary, but it certainly helps.

Really you just want to make a good working relationship between you and your editor.

And then, of course, look at the pricing and what they are offering. Some editors only offer a Developmental or a Line, and not a Combination.

How do they want to be paid? Do they offer payment plans? Do they want half up front and the rest on delivery?

Do NOT pay all up front.

Typically there is a 50% deposit and the balance on the due date. Most editors will also not give you the edited manuscript until final payment.

Look at their timeline. This one might need to be first, depending on your timeline.

But some editors book out months in advance while others have space open now. You should also ask them about how long it will take to get your book back to you.
